Elijah Craig Barrel Proof — Review

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof
Yum, yum, yummy!  Get some!

Overview:

Elijah Craig is known for being a best-vale bourbon. It’s namesake, Elijah Craig 12 is a must buy at around $30. It’s a bright, flavorful bourbon that impresses even though most snooty whiskey aficionado.

Well, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is, quite simply, doubling down on a great formula. High-quality bourbon at a cheap price!

Company Specs:

Named after the father of Bourbon Rev. Elijah Craig this limited release Small Batch, twelve-year-old Bourbon is bottled at Barrel Proof and without chill filtering, preserving the natural flavors produced during the aging process. At full Barrel Proof, you can enjoy the Bourbon much the same way our Master Distiller does when he samples straight from the barrel or, if you choose, add water to reduce the proof to your liking.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Deep Amber
Aroma: Caramel with oak, fruit notes of apple and orange
Taste: Caramel, vanilla and butterscotch along with spices of black pepper and cinnamon in the back of the palate
Finish: Nice layered finish of all flavors; fades slowly with a hint of cool spearmint at the most lingering end.

Tasting Grade: A-

For once, the company specs nail it!  That’s pretty much exactly how it goes, orangey fruit notes followed by caramel, vanilla (I didn’t get the butterscotch) with spices of black pepper and cinnamon.

The finish is certainly long, layered and leaves you with a blast of spearmint (or burn, though, not in a bad way).

Value Rating: A

At $50 it’s a steal!  Find some, get some!

Overall Rating: A-

Yeah, I love this stuff.  If it wasn’t a once-a-year-release or once a quarter release, I think this would be my go-to bourbon.  A must-have.  A whiskey you can really chew on and enjoy.

  1. The ECBP was my hands down favorite barrel proof offering(love the Stagg Jr., too!), until batch #10. Wow…what a hot mess! Batch #11 was better, but still unbalanced. Fortunately, Stagg Jr. has hit it’s stride and has remained steady.
